Loaves & Fishes Centers Provides Emergency Meals in Advance of Inclement Weather to Homebound Seniors

To ensure that all homebound seniors have sufficient meals during upcoming inclement weather, Loaves & Fishes Centers delivered a two-day supply of shelf-stable meals earlier this month to nearly 3,000 homebound seniors throughout Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties. Seniors received instructions to save these meals until they receive a call from their local Loaves & Fishes Center advising them to use these emergency supplies.

Rockwood Loaves & Fishes Center Holds Grand Opening

Thousands of baby boomers turn 60 every day in the greater metropolitan area and Loaves & Fishes Centers is prepared. That’s why the nonprofit organization recently opened its 36th senior dining center, located in the Rockwood neighborhood of Southeast Portland. To celebrate this new location and focus on the growing need for senior services, Loaves & Fishes Center is holding a grand opening event on Friday, Nov. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Rockwood Loaves & Fishes Center at 124 NE 181st Ave. The new meal site, located in the new Rockwood Building, is open for lunch Monday through Friday.

Federal Report Cites Millions of Seniors Go Hungry

A report recently released by Vermont Senator Bernard Sanders, chairman of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging, reports that 5 million seniors in this country face the threat of hunger, 3 million are at risk of going hungry and almost 1 million seniors do go hungry due to financial constraints. The report went on to say that seniors age 60 to 69 have the highest risk of senior hunger.

Whole Foods Flash Kitchen to Benefit Loaves & Fishes Centers

Whole Foods Market will sponsor a Flash Kitchen event at City Hall Park on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at noon. The event is free and open to the public, but Whole Foods will donate $1 to Loaves & Fishes Centers for every person who attends the event.
