Loaves & Fishes Centers Names Central Kitchen for Maybelle Clark Macdonald
Loaves & Fishes Centers has named their Central Kitchen in Multnomah Village to honor Maybelle Clark Macdonald, a philanthropist and long-time supporter of senior nutrition who passed away in 2010.
Mrs. Macdonald delivered Meals-On-Wheels for many years in downtown Portland and coined the phrase “Meals-On-Heels” for her fashionable footwear when making deliveries. Mrs. Macdonald was instrumental in developing Loaves & Fishes Centers’ first kitchen in 1970, again when the organization moved to a larger kitchen in 1979 and was a major contributor to the kitchen, which opened in 2003. The 14,000-square-foot Maybelle Clark Macdonald Kitchen produces 5,000 meals daily for seniors throughout the metropolitan area.
Loaves & Fishes Centers would not be the successful nonprofit organization it is today without the support of Maybelle Clark Macdonald. She was passionate about senior nutrition and ensuring that every senior who needed a meal received one and donated both her time and her wealth to the cause. Upon her death she bequeathed a $1 million legacy gift to the organization.
The kitchen was renamed during Loaves & Fishes Centers Annual Meeting in September. Present for the occasion were Mrs. Macdonald’s son Clark Munro, Sr., Chairman of the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund Board of Directors, and her granddaughter, who serves as President of the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, Monique McCleary. Also present were Gary Branden, who serves on the MCM Fund Board, and Janeen McIninch, who serves on both the Loaves & Fishes Centers board of directors and the board for the Fund.
